About Onion Transplants
If you started onions from seed or if you purchased transplants, now is the time to plant them outside. Transplants look like green onions with small bulbs below the dirt and green stalks above. Often there are several in each pot—separate them before planting. For more about onions, click here.
Happy gardening!

Laura–If your gardening season is colder than usual, just follow the violet links. I know mine is–snow on the ground this morning!
Do you have kohlrabi as one of your plants? I assume it’s similar to broccoli, right? I’ve transplanted mine to my garden already. Is it also possible to get switched from blue to the violet group? It’s just been a long cold spring here for the third year in a row. Or do I just need to click on violet instead? Thanks so much for all you do!
Magda,
It’s helpful to know that different cities can have different planting dates–my cousin lives 20 minutes away and can plant several weeks sooner. So that is one reason they have all those plants. Another–if you use walls of water or cold frames you can start those plants outside quite a bit sooner. My site is focused on beginners, and so I don’t go into that much. Third, they sell them because they can make money. Now, I think a good nursery would tell you when it’s safe to plant, but Home Depot and Walmart seem to carry items whenever people will buy them.
It sounds to me like you need to make a garden plan. I’ll be posting about that tomorrow morning, so be sure to read it!

Emily,
Thank you so much for your wonderful website. I’m a begginer gardener and this past weekend my husband and I got our very first 2×8 garden bed. I’m in your green group, so I have several weeks before I should start planting my tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and other herbs that we could like to grow.
This weekend while we were out gathering our materials we saw that Lowes, HD, walmart, all have all of those ready to be transplanted. That’s just got me very confused. Why do they sell them if it’s not the right time to plant them???
Also, if I plant my lettuce and spinach now when should I expect to harvest?? SInce I only have 16 squares I want to make sure I have space for the rest when it’s time to plant.
Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to the website, it’s thaught me a lot.

Emily, my pumpkin seed packets say you can start them indoors at 3-4 weeks before the last frost date. So you could add them to this list. You can start them outdoors or transplant outdoors after last danger of frost.
