About Peas

Peas should go in the ground between weeks -9 and -5, as soon as the ground is 40 degrees (not frozen) and you are able to plant them. Peas are frost hardy and do better in cool weather. Click here for more information on peas.

    Thank you so much!

Kristin–Peas can be planted anywhere between week -9 and week -4, depending on the source you check. The bottom line is, wait until the snow is gone and you can work the earth–that’s when to start!

I am fairly new to SFG although we did set-up boxes last year. I am ‘green’ on your chart and am curious about planting peas outside. Our boxes are still covered with snow so I haven’t been able to check/work the soil at all. Should I wait to plant? Shovel off the snow and try to warm the ground with plastic? I am in Michigan.

Thanks so much for your website I have found it to be really helpful. Our broccoli and cauliflower have sprouted and look great!

    Thanks again!

I bought size I found at Home Depot–I think it was 5″x5″, and 6′ long. It came with 3 holes for railings already routed (cut) out of one side. I used a miter saw to cut the posts down to size. Then I used a router with a jig to cut any other holes I needed. If I was working on a surface without a pre-cut hole, I drilled a small hole first, then used the router.

This makes me realize that I really need to write a post about how to build a box. This would benefit from some calculations and photos!

When you made your vinyl grow boxes, what size of post did you buy? Did you buy 6 ft.posts and cut off the ends or did you find them already the size you needed?

    Thanks!
